Andover Town 3–3 (3–1 pens) South Wonston Swifts

Andover Town booked their place in the next round of the Andover Open Cup after surviving their second Penalty shoot out of the season. Andover made eight changes to the squad that trounced Bashley and handed debuts to two members of the youth squad in the starting line up with another on the bench.

Against the run of play South Wonston took an early eighth minute lead as Matt Boast fired in a screamer from twenty five yards. Edu Jimenez then tested the Swifts goalkeeper Ben West before Alex Dockree’s sublime crossfield pass found Craig Blakeman who made no mistake for the equaliser. Ronan Clancy hit a post before Reece Rusher gave Andover the lead cutting in from the right to plant the ball wide of West into the far corner of the net. The rest of the first half was keenly contested with West being the busiest of the Two Goalkeepers but few chances were created.

Soon after the restart Rusher was again in the thick of the action and he was unlucky not to score twice within the space of five minutes.First his curler from wide on the right was punched,with some difficulty ,over the bar by West,and then his well struck free kick also from distance struck the bar. Finally Rusher’s hard work was rewarded when his assist set up Alex Dockree to score Andover’s Third from close range. From this point Andover should have been able to hold on but with eight minutes left Liam Nancholas was brought down in the area by McAulie Stubbs and Boast sent Kieran McHardy the wrong way with the spot kick. Understandably The Swifts now enjoyed their best period of the game and two minutes into added time McIntyre scored with a volley that was a mirror image of the first goal. Thanks to two excellent saves by Kieran McHardy South Wonston were only able to put away one spot kick ,whilst Stubbs, Dockree, and Javier Santafe-Vivo all made no mistake and secure Andover’s place in the second round draw.
